We started in Los Angeles so that we could stay with family. This helped us get used to the time-zone and learn to drive on the wrong side of the road. We did all the usual tourist stuff, the Hollywood sign, the Walk of Fame, Disney.

After a week, we drove north up the Route 101 to San Luis Obispo and stayed there for 1 night. We didn’t really see much, but did eat in a really nice Italian restaurant.

In the morning, we drove up the Route 1 – Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), stopping at Hearst Castle, although it’s not really a castle – we have real ones here in the UK. Continuing up the PCH we drove up past Big Sur, and stopped in Monterey for a while and had a walk along the pier. We then drove into San Francisco and stayed for 3 nights.

In San Francisco, we visited Alcatraz Island. This is such a great place. It has its own separate blog page here with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. We also visited Lombard Street, Pier 39, the Port and Union Square and travelled on the city’s cable cars.

After our time in San Francisco, we continued north-east along the I-80 to Sacramento then headed east on the H-50 to South Lake Tahoe where we stayed for two nights. South Lake Tahoe was such a beautiful place. While we were there, we managed to take a cruise on the lake for a couple of hours to enjoy the scenery and soak up the peaceful surroundings.

After our stay in South Lake Tahoe, we drove south on the H-395 to Mammoth Lakes. On the way, we stopped at several viewpoints to enjoy the many lakes and mountains. Once we reached Mammoth Lakes, we headed to Mammoth Mountain where we took the gondola up to 11,053 feet to enjoy the stunning outlook.

After a couple of nights in Mammoth Lakes, we continued south back to Los Angeles where we stayed with family for a couple of more nights.

We then headed south to San Diego for a few days where we visited Sea World and swam with the dolphins. We also saw the many shows and attractions on at Sea World.

Finally we headed back to Los Angeles for a few more days and a bit of retail therapy before flying back to the UK.
